What is going to happen in 2012, the end of the world? Only time will tell.

2012: the best of times or the end of time
by Keren Clark
December 21, 2012.
This date is familiar to many and may be new to some but it has now erupted
into mainstream culture with a vengeance, which is how many see its
significance.
For others, Solstice 2012 brings thoughts of hope and even of redemption
for humanity and our planet.
Articles pertaining to 2012 are not limited to new age publications. Generally
respected newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times and The Times
Herald in the United States as well as England’s Daily Record and Telegraph
newspapers have been following events leading up to “The End of Days.”
Mainstream media organizations such as ABC News, MSNBC and Fox News
have aired news stories.
A Yahoo search for “2012” yields 568 million results. The History Channel
launched its first full week of new programming for 2009 with a series entitled
Armageddon Week, focused on the predictions for this portentous
year.
Dennis McClung, 29-year-old co-founder of 2012Supplies.com, says, “2012
has really taken off right now in terms of the media and popular culture. When
we first started the website a lot of people hadn’t heard of 2012.”
The predictions themselves are alleged to come from sources as far-flung as
the book of Revelations in the Christian Bible, fifth and sixth century Mayan
culture, the ancient Hopi and Nostradamus, a sixteenth century apothecary
turned occultist and prophet.
According to many, these civilizations and sources detail the end of the world,
at least as we know it, on the eve of the 2012 Solstice.
“There are a lot of different ideas. I’m not a firm believer in any one particular philosophy,” McClung says.
According to Jenkins, these stelae depict the Mayan Long Count calendar with a beginning date of 3114 B.C. and an end date of Dec. 21, 2012.
The Maya appear to have been tracking time long before the beginning of their civilization in around 200 A.D. and extending well into the future.
The fact that the Mayan Long Count calendar ends in 2012 and that this date coincides with the galactic alignment has many, like Jenkins,
convinced that time, as the Maya viewed it and as we know it, will simply end.
Frank Waters, author of The Book of the Hopi, first published in 1963, reports that, according to Hopi prophecies, “The Emergence of the future
Fifth World has begun.” It will be accompanied by world war and mass destruction.
The Bible’s book of Revelations is cited by many as being a prophecy of the destruction of the earth as well.
Many in the 2012 community see current economic and political distress and climate change as signs not only that dramatic steps are needed
to address these issues, but also that the end may be near.
McClung says, “I do believe 2012 will be a time of transition. I feel we’re already in transition.” McClung, a former Home Depot sales manager,
founded his web-based business, along with his 22-year-old wife, Danielle,
out a desire for self-sufficiency as well as in the best interests of his family. “It made me feel good learning about survival and preparation so if
anything does happen I’m not relying on anyone else to help me. I can help
myself.”
McClung is not alone in his concern for the future. Around the world people are gathering, talking and preparing for the disasters they are sure
will come.
On the first weekend of Nov. 2008 a 2012 Conference was held in San Francisco. Louis Sahagun, reporting for the Los Angeles Times says,
“participants shelled out $300 each to attend the sold-out 2012 Conference, where astrologers, UFO fans, shamans and New Age
entrepreneurs of every stripe presented their dreams and dreads in two days of lectures, group meditations,
documentaries and, of course, self-promotion.” More such conferences are currently scheduled around the country.
Bruno Waterfield of the British publication, The Telegraph, writes, “Thousands of Dutch people are buying boats and building bunkers to await
an apocalypse predicted by the Maya of South America.”
The evidence for the end of the world can be seen to mount with each new headline. On the website, ScientificAmerican.com, on Dec. 30,
2008, David Biello reports that Yellowstone National Park is rumbling and is overdue for an eruption. “…The big one could be imminent in the
wake of a series of 30-plus mini-earthquakes in the park over the past few days…”
According to other recent scientific reports, the largest breach of the earth’s magnetic field was detected in December. If that is not alarming
enough, the recent quiet period of solar flare activity is likely to be followed by bigger solar flares than have been seen in the past.
The end result of the aftermath of Dec. 21, 2012 seems to fall into two philosophical camps: the absolute and final destruction of humanity and
the earth, or a paradigm shift, so profound that we cannot currently imagine it,
which will result in our salvation.
